New York State Rehabilitation Association Honors David Liscomb

Watertown, New York  September 3, 2008—The Jefferson Rehabilitation Center is proud to announce that  David Liscomb will be honored with the New York State Rehabilitation Association’s 2008 Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award in Albany, New York on September 16th. Mr. Liscomb had earlier moved from an institutional setting, to independent living in the community, to being a leader in the self-advocacy movement in its early stages, to his current position of NYSSAA President.

david-liscomb.JPGThe Self-Advocacy Award is named after Thomas A Maul, former Commissioner of New York State’s Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, recognizing his passionate work on behalf of people of differing abilities and the self-advocacy movement, which promotes a person’s ability to speak and act on behalf of themselves and respect the right of others to do the same.

“David has proven that while possessing the qualities of leadership, and being driven towards a goal; anything can be achieved,” said Daniel Stern, JRC Executive Director, “He is a shining example of what “self-advocacy” truly means.”

The New York State Rehabilitation Association is a statewide organization

representing over 130 rehabilitation providers, that advocates on behalf of individuals with developmental disabilities, mental illness, deaf and hearing impaired and vision problems, in addition to addiction and traumatic brain injuries.

NYSRA’s member agencies such as the Jefferson Rehabilitation Center are instrumental in providing options and opportunities for people with disabilities to successfully live and  work in our community.

Earlier this summer Mr. Liscomb was selected as NYSARC, Inc.’s 2008 Self-Advocate of the Year.
